Around eighteen months had past since the last plant closed down that we began to see our orders slowing down which seemed unusual because our products went into each unit being delivered. We had heard rumours that management was negotiating with foreign investors to produce our goods in their country at a significant savings in labour. I took the fact that the orders were slowing that things were about to change and not for the better. I knew that I had some time so I started to look for other ways to earn money while I kept my working at my job. I wanted to find something that would provide me with an alternate income when the inevitable lay-off announcement came. After looking all over the Internet and checking out opportunities in magazines and books in the library I decided to go with a home-based business. The home based business idea fit well into my time off from work because I could work it when I had time and when it was convenient for me and my family. And what I thought to be the best part of the home-based business was that it didn’t cost much at all to start. Running the business from our home was a significant savings from having to rent or buy a storefront. In the evenings that we weren’t doing any family activities we worked on our new home business. During the day while I was working my wife continued to work on the business an activity that she really enjoyed especially when it started to grow and pay off for us. We were both excited about the extra money that was coming in from our home business that we started to plan for our dream vacation something that we thought would always remain a dream.

In addition to providing us with an alternate income stream our home business allowed us to take several tax breaks that we never would have been able to do before. Our local tax code allowed us to write off our home office that was used for the purposes of doing the business along with many of our internet and telephone expenses.

Around a year since we started our home based business my company finally decided to close its doors and move its operations overseas. I was upset for a while because I had made quite a few friends while I was working there but the loss of income from there wasn’t nearly as devastating as it could have been if I hadn’t started my home based business. In order to find another job that pays anything I would have to leave the area and we weren’t ready to do that. After all, all of our friends are here and the kids are near graduation from high school so it would be cruel to move everything now. We have decided to work our home-based business full time so we can stay near the people we care about. At the rate that the business is growing I may never have to go back to a traditional job.

After seeing what I have gone through the past few years my children have decided that they will seek employment in the public sector where jobs are secure and you can still retire at a young age with a decent pension and start their own home businesses to help with diversifying their income.
